Music Club to Hold Event at Stifel Center

The Thursday Music Club will hold its annual membership tea-coffee event at 11 a.m. Thursday at a new location, Oglebay Institute’s Stifel Fine Arts Center, 1330 National Road, Wheeling.

Membership chairwoman Nancy Holt and the membership committee are in charge of the table decorations and greeting members and guests. To make a reservation, call Emily Mayer at 304-232-1714 by Monday. There is no charge for this meeting.

Vocalist John Heiserman and accompanist Debbie Breiding will perform at the tea. Heiserman is the winner of the club’s Gretchen McKee Scholarship and the Carol E. Austin Performing Arts Award for 2017, given in memory of Helen Pierce Elbin.

Heiserman is a senior vocal performance major at West Liberty University and studies with Dr. Linda Cowan. He lives in Weirton and is a Brooke High School graduate. He hopes to pursue a master’s degree in opera performance.

He has appeared in Michael Ching’s opera, “Speed Dating Tonight,” and John Sherwood’s musical, “Ramayana.” Heiserman has performed multiple solos with the West Liberty Singers, including Dan Forrest’s “Requiem for the Living” and Beethoven’s “Choral Fantasy.” Most recently, he appeared in Hilltop Opera’s performance of “Die Fledermaus” by Johann Strauss.

The club’s officers for 2017-18 are Lynn Welsh, president; Susanne McCormick, vice president; Arlene Lawson, secretary, and Carol Couch, treasurer.

Program chairwoman Kathryn Wallington and the program committee have arranged the line-up for the 2017-18 season:

∫ Oct. 5 — Music In Ac-Chord with soloist Robert Irwin and conductor Dr. Millard Neal conductor.

∫ Nov. 2 — Pittsburgh Opera.

∫ Dec. 7 — Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra, directed by Dr. Matthew Inkster.

∫ Feb. 1 — Instrumentalist Eli Lambie.

∫ March 1 — Lazy River Jazz Band, with Paul Ring.

∫ April 5 — Thursday Music Club chorus, directed by Anita Chops and accompanied by Breiding.

The club has sponsorships for its programs this year: Geri Sloane, September; Dr. George and Carol Couch, October; Progressive Bank, November, and Dr. Clyde and Joan Campbell, December.

The club’s study group will meet at 1 p.m. on the second Monday of each month, beginning Oct. 9, at St. James Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1409 Chapline St., Wheeling. For more information, call Betty Davis, 740-695-3274.
