Schmitts Celebrate 65th

Henry and Virginia Schmitt of St. Clairsville celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary Saturday, Feb. 18.

They were united in marriage Feb. 18, 1947 at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Wheeling. Robert Schmitt served as best man and the late Genevieve Bernhart was maid of honor.

Virginia Schmitt is the daughter of the late Lawrence and Emma Bernhart. She is retired from Edward L. Schmitt, CPA.

Schmitt is the son of the late Lawrence and Eulalia Schiffer Schmitt. He is retired from the Wheeling Fire Department and Wheeling Jesuit University where he served as director of the physical plant. He is also a World War II veteran where he served in the Air Force.

They are the parents of five children. The family includes Edward and his wife, Teresa; Charles and his wife, Sue; Janet Schmitt; James and his wife, Jennifer, and Bernard and his wife, Iris. They have 15 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

They celebrated their anniversary on Sunday, Feb. 19, with a Mass at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church celebrated by the Rev. Frank O’Kruta and the Rev. George Smoulder, deacon. After the event, a family brunch was held at Perkins in Wheeling.
