Author Wins Two Awards In Contest
Congratulations are in store for Wheeling author Marc Harshman, who has won two awards in the 2010 Literal Latte Short Short Contest for fiction. His two prize-winning short short stories have been published in the May 2011 issue of Literal Latte, a journal of prose, poetry and art.
The titles of Harshman’s new published pieces are “With Shakespeare in the Admissions Room at Yale” and “And The Catafalques Are All Empty.”
It’s a big month for Harshman because a dramatized version of his popular children’s picture book, “Rocks in My Pockets,” will have its premiere at Oglebay Institute’s Towngate Theatre in Wheeling later in May.
The Towngate Children’s Theatre production of “Rocks in My Pockets” will be performed at 7 p.m. Friday, May 27, and at 2 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday, May 28-29.
Bonnie Collins and Harshman wrote the children’s book several years ago, and it was well received after publication. Wheeling playwright Tom Stobart has now adapted the book for the stage. Area musicians David Board and Rick Call have provided music for the new play.
Harshman, a graduate of Bethany College, Yale Divinity School and the University of Pittsburgh, has written several children’s books and volumes of poetry. He is well known as a storyteller and presenter in schools, libraries and community settings.
Another Bethany College graduate, Frances McDormand, also is making news these days.
McDormand, an Academy Award-winning actress and a member of Bethany’s Class of 1979, has been named a 65th Tony Awards nominee for best lead actress in a play for her role in the Broadway play, “Good People.”
The other nominees in that category are Nina Arianda, “Born Yesterday”; Lily Rabe, “The Merchant of Venice”; Vanessa Redgrave, “Driving Miss Daisy,” and Hannah Yelland, “Brief Encounter.”
The Tony Awards show will be broadcast live on CBS at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 12.
Wheeling native Charlie Wilmoth has been selected as one of the best “100 Composers Under 40” by Q2, an Internet music stream, and NPR Music.
Wilmoth is the oldest son of Becky and Bill Wilmoth of Wheeling.
