Acker Celebrates 95th

Waneta Acker of St. Clairsville will celebrate her 95th birthday on Tuesday, June 23.

Acker is the mother of two children. The family includes Susan (George) Gabel of St. Clairsville and Glen (Margie) Acker of Cross Lanes, W.Va. She has four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Acker is retired from Cook-Wade Dental Lab and the Life Insurance Co. of Virginia. She is well known for her volunteer work and actively involved in politics. She began working for her father’s campaign when William Britton ran for magistrate in Bridgeport. When she moved to Wheeling, she became involved with the Ohio County Democratic Executive Board and was named Democrat of the Year in 1998 and 2003. She volunteered her time working for several candidates at the local, state and federal level.

Acker is a member of the Friends of the Northern Community College Foundation and was honored in 2010 as member of the year. She also is a board member of the Upper Ohio Valley Italian American Festival and an auxiliary member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, where she served on the board and is the “Salad Lady” for the annual spaghetti dinner.

A family celebration will be held in her honor with her children, grandchildren and friends.
