Lunch With Books

Wheeling historian Margaret Brennan will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday, June 23, to explore the role of Wheeling Hospital and the Sisters of St. Joseph in caring for wounded soldiers, both Union and Confederate, during the Civil War.

Preservation Alliance

The South Wheeling Preservation Alliance will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3536 Eoff St., Wheeling, at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, June 23. Travis Henline, site manager of West Virginia Independence Hall in Wheeling, will present a program, “History of the Native People of the Upper Ohio Valley.”

Summer Reading

Storyteler Suzi “Mama” Whaples will present a children’s program, “Mama and the Mountain Women,” at the Moundsville Public Library at 11 a.m. Monday, June 22, and at the Benwood-McMechen Public Library at 2 p.m. that day.

Mickey Massey will present a children’s program, “You Are the Hero,” at the Moundsville Public Library at 11 a.m. Tuesday, June 23.

Stories and crafts will be offered at the Benwood-McMechen Public Library at 11 a.m. Friday, June 26.

Children’s programs at the Cameron Public Library will be “Super Art Teacher” with Anna Blake at 1 p.m. Monday, June 22, and Super Hero crafts with Josey Stern at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 23.

The summer reading programs are free and open to the public.

Baked Chicken Dinner

Ladies Oriental Shrine

Visitation of the grand high priestess for Ladies Oriental Shrine of North America will be held Saturday, June 27, at Scottish Rite Cathedral, 14th Street, Wheeling. Lunch will be served at noon with a court meeting at 1 p.m. A dinner with the grand high priestess will be held at Undo’s, National Road, Wheeling, that evening.

Herb Day Luncheon

An Herb Day luncheon will be held at the Belmont County Victorian Mansion Museum, 532 N. Chestnut St., Barnesville, at noon Saturday, June 27.

Lorrinda Saxby and Carole Lepic with the Belmont County master gardeners will present a program with displays and demonstrations on the uses of herbs after the noon luncheon.

Summer Concert

The variety group Cetorelli, Graham & Hoskins will perform rock and roll, rhythm and blues, Motown, Southern rock and country music at Epworth Park in Bethesda from 7-9 p.m. Saturday, June 27. The free concert will be held in the covered, open-air auditorium.

The Epworth Park summer concert series is sponsored by the Epworth Park Cottage Owners Association in association with the Belmont County Tourism Council. The annual concerts are supported by voluntary contributions. A snack bar is open before and during the show.

Fitness Class

The Brooke County Public Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, will hold a “Back to Basics with Cindy” fitness class at 9:30 a.m. Thursday, June 25. Cindy Dobbs from Cindy’s Fusion Fitness will instruct the low-impact, basic fitness class.

Library Book Club

The Brooke County Public Library’s book club will meet at the library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 25, to discuss “The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society” by Annie Barrows and Mary Ann Shaffer.

Participants will receive the July book, “Spool of Blue Thread” by Anne Tyler, at this meeting. The book club is free and open to the public.

Lunch-Movie

Blood Drive

A blood drive with Central Blood Bank will be held at Wheeling Hospital’s auditorium B from 11:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday, June 23. To make the donation faster and more convenient, registration and appointments may be made ahead of time by visiting online at www.centralbloodbank.org and searching with sponsor code W382.

Donors may also register for the Central Blood Bank Brighten Life Rewards Program and earn rewards with every donation.

To donate, participants must be 17 years old (or 16 with a signed parental consent). Donors should also bring proper identification.

CPR Class

A Family and Friends CPR Anytime class, sponsored by Wheeling Hospital, will be offered at the hospital’s Howard Long Wellness Center at 11 a.m. Friday, June 26.

The 22-minute program teaches cardio-pulmonary resuscitation skills that could save a life. This free program is for people who do not need a course completion card to satisfy a work requirement. It is not a certification course. For more information and to register, call 304-243-3932.

Spaghetti Dinner

A spaghetti dinner will be held at the Bridgeport Fire Department from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, June 28, to benefit Bridgeport firefighter Lee Rush, who sustained severe facial injuries in a home accident. For more information, call Norma Teasdale at 740-635-9255

Book Release

Ohio County resident JoAnn Davis will release her second children’s book, “Pickled Pepper,” at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, from 2-4 p.m. Sunday, June 28.

The story tells of “pickles” that a dog named Pepper causes at his best friend Marian’s birthday party. It is an interactive book with coloring pages and fun pages at the end.

Books will be available for purchase and signing. Light refreshments will be served.

Museum Cookbook

Pleasant Hill School House Historical Museum, Steubenville, is now taking pre-paid orders for its newest cookbook, “Memories From the Heart.” The cookbook contains 200 recipes, a history of the 1880 one-room school, photos and a calendar of 2015 events.

Concert

The fifth annual Sean Carney’s Blues for a Cure 2015-Harrison County, a free public concert, will be held at Sally Buffalo Park, 100 College Way, Cadiz, at 5 p.m. Saturday, June 27. Hess Energy is the major sponsor of this event that benefits the Harrison Community Hospital Foundation and the American Cancer Society’s Harrison County relay teams.

Headlining this year’s event is the blues group, Southern Hospitality, supported by Damon Fowler, JP Soars and the Red Hots, and Victor Wainwright and the Wild Roots. Special guests are Hadden Sayers and Sean Carney from Columbus and Billy the Kid from Pittsburgh.

Food will be catered. Water, soda and sports drinks will be available for purchase. Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs, sun tents and blankets.

International Program

The Ohio County Cooperative Extension Office and the Community Education Outreach Service Club will sponsor their 2015 international student in a presentation about his home country, Libya. The program will be held at Edgwood Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1154 National Road, Wheeling, at 1:30 p.m. Monday, June 8.

Ormet Retirees

The Ormet Retirees Club will meet at the old Hannibal School at 1 p.m. Tuesday, June 9, for a picnic. All hourly employees who have paid dues can attend. The club will provide meat and baked beans.

David Moore will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday, June 9, to discuss his book, “William S. Rosecrans and the Union Victory: A Civil War Biography.” Rosecrans was stationed in Wheeling for a time at the Charles Wells Russell house and designed one of the most successful battlefield ambulances used in the war.

Quilt Guild

The National Road Quilt Guild will meet at East Richland Evangelical Friends Church cafeteria, National Road, St. Clairsville, at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 9. Refreshments will be served during a social hour.

After a business meeting, certified area quilt instructor Janet Andrews will present a program on “UFOs (UnFinished quilt Objects) Lurking in the Attic.” Guests may attend. Membership is open.

Green Acres Club

Members of the Green Acres Community Education Outreach Service Club will travel to Washington, Pa., for a special outing Wednesday, June 10. They will meet in the parking lot of Christ United Methodist Church, Wheeling, to form a car pool to Washington. They will attend a strawberry luncheon at First Methodist Church, Beau Street, Washington. This event will replace the regular June meeting.

Daughters of American Revolution

The Wheeling chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at Wheeling Country Club at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday, June 10. Gary Rider will speak on “Neighborhood Veterans.”

Day quilters will meet at Pat Muth’s home in Wheeling from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Thursday, June 18, with Muth and Ruth Ellen Fise as hosts. Participants work on their own projects and bring a covered dish to share.

Kauffman, one of the foremost Lincoln assassination authorities. In his bestselling book, “American Brutus,” Kauffman takes familiar history to a deeper level, offering an unprecedented, authoritative account of the Lincoln murder conspiracy.

Genealogical Society

The Belmont County chapter of the Ohio Genealogical Society will meet in the genealogy room at Barnesville Hutton Memorial Library, 308 E. Main St., at 3 p.m. Sunday, June 14. The program will be identifying old pictures from the Barnesville Enterprise newspaper. The meeting is free and open to the public.

Support Group

Wheeling Hospital’s Blood Cancer Support Group will meet in conference room D at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, June 10. Patients, family members, friends, caregivers and health professionals will receive updates on blood cancers.

Salad Luncheon

A salad luncheon to benefit the Daily Bread Center will be held at First Presbyterian Church, Fourth and Walnut streets, Martins Ferry, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Thursday, June 11. Take-out meals also will be available. A chance auction will be held.

Summer Reading

Summer reading program events highlighting the theme of “Every Hero Has a Story” begin at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 13, with a special film showing of “Into the Woods,” rated PG and suited to school-age children through adults. Then at noon Monday, June 15, the library will show the film, “Tinker Bell and the Legend of the Neverbeast,” rated G and aimed at younger children. Both events are free and open to the public.

Island Lions Club

The Island Lions Club is holding a meeting for the public to learn about the Urban Garden for the Blind, which is sprouting up on Wheeling Island. The free event will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, June 15, at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on South Penn Street. Karen Haught, executive director of the Seeing Hand Association, will discuss the garden, which was designed by Martin Wach.

The garden’s design enables the visually impaired to navigate among the vegetables and flowers through special techniques involving sense of touch, hearing and smell.
