Hogan’s a Hero

Susan C. Hogan’s passion and interests have touched many in the Ohio Valley and beyond. She has worked with women and families, with youth, with music and with art, to make the local community, and others, better and more beautiful. In the center of her work is caring for others in many ways.

In recognition of her passion and work, Hogan is the 2015 Good Samaritan for Youth Services System Inc.

Hogan has been a Peace Corps volunteer working in Benin with her husband, William N. “Bill” Hogan Jr., for four years.

She has been the executive director of Wheeling’s YWCA and the Wheeling Symphony Orchestra.

Always, Susan has been an enthusiastic Wheeling booster and a champion of people working together.

She is a charter board member of Grow Ohio Valley. She serves on the West Virginia Music Hall of Fame board. She serves as a commissioner for the arts for the state Department of Culture and History. She is an active member of the Rotary Club of Wheeling, working with its Read Aloud program as a volunteer at Madison Elementary School. She helped restore the Madison Square Garden at the school in the memory of D. Milton Gutman.

She is active with the Mayor’s Arts and Culture Commission, overseeing multiple art projects including the Pocket Park, Wheeling’s first art installation. She is chair of Reinvent Wheeling’s design committee leading efforts to install art and develop green space in the city. From food, to art, to education and recreation, her goal is to nurture and to create.

Hogan’s work has been recognized by the West Virginia Martin Luther King Commission with their Living The Dream award in 2000. Mayor Andy McKenzie made her the first recipient of the Community Spirit Award in 2012. This spring, Hogan was inducted into the Wheeling Hall of Fame for her public service.

“I know from working with Susan for years on the Youth Services System board, how much she cares about the people in this community. Her dedication, her energy and her optimism are just some of the great things she brings to all of us. That is why Susan is our Good Samaritan,” said Marc Abraham, chair of Youth Services System’s board.

“In the parable of the Good Samaritan, the question is asked ‘Who is my neighbor?’ As in the parable, Susan would say we are all neighbors. Every act of compassion is a beautiful thing in and of itself. Susan has done much to make Wheeling a beautiful place,” added CEO John Moses.

The Good Samaritan Tribute Dinner celebrating Hogan will take place Thursday, Aug. 6, at the White Palace Ballroom, Wheeling Park, starting at 5:30 p.m. with hors d’oeuvres. For ticket information, call Holly Fox, 304-218-2847 or email hfox@ysswv.com.
