Special Activities

Film Showing

The Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., will present the film, “Zootopia,” rated PG, at noon Monday. It is part of the library’s summer reading program aimed at children and showcasing special events.

The film showing is free and open to the public. Guests may bring snacks and seat cushions or floor        pillows.

Genealogical Society

The Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society will meet in the St. Clairsville Public Library’s meeting room, 108 W. Main St., at 6:30 p.m. Aug. 8. Guest speaker David Mertz, professor and chair of the building preservation and restoration program at Belmont College, will give a presentation on “Service Learning.” He will discuss how students benefit from projects as they work in the community as well as in the classroom.

All of the genealogical society’s meetings are free and open to the public.

Lunch With Books

Former Wheeling residents Ray and Barbara Bane will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday to discuss a new book, “Our Perfect Wild,” chronicling their life and experiences in remote areas of Alaska.

Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Attendees may bring a bag lunch; complimentary beverages are       provided.

Newcomers Club

The Wheeling Newcomers Club will meet at Belmont Hills Country Club, St. Clairsville, at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 11. Kevin Britt, chief operating officer of Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, will speak on the impact of the hospital’s recent affiliation with West Virginia University and Reynolds’ innovative drug program.

People’s University

The new People’s University course, Appalachian Music and Folklore, opens at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ohio County Public Library auditorium, 52 16th St., Wheeling. The first session, “Appalachian Music: A Multicultural Overview,” will feature Dr. Travis Stimeling, director of West Virginia University’s bluegrass band and scholar of Appalachian music, and area vocalist Liz Richter .

The free sessions continue at 7 p.m. every Tuesday through Sept. 20.

Coffeehouse

Singer John J. Mensore will take the stage at ArtsLink’s Coffeehouse Series to celebrate his 78th birthday. The free concert will be presented at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Lincoln Theater in downtown New Martinsville. Light refreshments will be provided.

Baked Steak Dinner

The Flushing Volunteer Fire Department will hold a baked steak dinner beginning at 3 p.m. Friday. Drinks and desserts will be available for an extra charge.

The fire department also will have an open house with fire trucks and ambulances on display. Fire safety pamphlets and coloring books will be distributed. Games and raffles will be offered.

Bake Sale

The auxiliary of Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 626, Bellaire, will hold a bake sale in the lobby of Chase Bank, Bellaire, beginning at 8 a.m. Friday.

Junior Aviator Day

The St. Clairsville RC Flyers will hold Junior Aviator Day at the club’s flying field on Pogue Road from 1-5 p.m. Aug. 7. All youth, ages 2-15, may attend and learn about model aviation. Flight demonstrations will be given with pilots available to answer questions. Youth can watch all types of model aircraft. Computer flight simulators and flight instruction will be available. Healthy Life Workshop

Carol A. Teter, diabetes nurse educator at Harrison Community Hospital, will present the second part of a series on “Sugar:  How to Tame Your Cravings.” The free workshop will be held in the hospital cafeteria, 951 E. Market St., Cadiz, from 6:30-7:30 p.m. Thursday.

Light refreshments will be served. Reservations are not necessary.

Butterfly Releases

The 12th annual Valley Hospice memorial butterfly releases will be held at Wheeling Park’s White Palace from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 15 and at Steubenville Country Club from 6-8 p.m. Aug. 16.

The events are open to the public. There is a cost for butterflies, which must be ordered by Thursday. As an added feature this year, attendees have an opportunity to submit a loved one’s name and/or photograph to be included in a memorial slideshow. Stress Management Class

The Brooke County Public Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, will offer a stress management class, presented through Marshall University’s Pathways to Wellness Program, from 5-5:30 p.m. Friday. The presentation will feature simple stretches, breathing exercises and relaxation techniques.

Computer Help

The Follansbee branch of the Brooke County Public Library will offer computer help with resumes and online job applications from 1-2 p.m. Saturday. Help will be provided by library employee Natalie Staffileno.
