East Ohio Regional Hospital to Hold Free Car Seat, Bike Safety Check-Up

MARTINS FERRY — East Ohio Regional Hospital is holding a free car seat checkup and bike safety event from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. Friday near the parking area adjacent to the emergency room. All parents, grandparents and babysitters may “drive through” the car seat checkpoint to ensure that a child’s car seat is installed properly.

According to national statistics, more than 80 percent of car seats are installed incorrectly. Sherri Kellas, Ohio Valley Medical Center’s women’s services navigator and certified child passenger safety technician, said, “OVMC and EORH are proud to host this very important event for our community. This is a great opportunity for everyone to make sure your most precious cargo is safe and secure in the event of an accident. We are thrilled to partner with the Ohio Buckles Buckeyes program and provide these services.”

“A car seat is the child’s first line of defense to preventing injury from a motor vehicle crash,” said Albert Bond, registered nurse and director of EMSTAR at OVMC. “A properly installed and fitting car seat is the the way parents or guardians can maximize the child’s protection and prevent serious injury.”

In addition to the car seat check, Jeremy Wendel from the OVMC-EORH trauma department will provide bike safety information and will do a bike helmet check to make sure children are wearing the proper helmets. A limited amount of free bike helmets will be distributed; it is necessary for the child to be present to ensure a proper fit.
