Symphony Performs Music Under the Stars at Oglebay

The Wheeling Symphony Orchestra returns to its roots for the annual Music Under the Stars concert. The family-friendly, free concert — a celebration of show tunes, dance and American classics — will be held in Oglebay Park’s Anne Kuchinka Amphitheater at 7:30 p.m. next Sunday.

“Our annual Music Under the Stars concert is a wonderful homecoming for the orchestra. Some of the WSO’s first concerts were held at Oglebay, and this year’s repertoire looks back as we perform community favorites that appeal to classical and contemporary music fans alike. With works from the great American song book by Cole Porter and Duke Ellington, it’s a concert that the whole family will enjoy,” said Bruce Wheeler, WSO executive director.

A veranda reception will be held on the porch of the clubhouse beginning at 5 p.m.; reservations are required. The concert is free and open to the public.

WSO music director and conductor, Andre Raphel selected music that bridges generations including Leonard Bernstein’s lively and rhythmic “Overture to Candide,” Kander and Ebb’s jazzy opening to the hit Broadway musical and movie “Chicago,” Rimsky-Korsakov’s wonderfully bright, percussive “Capriccio Espagnol” based on Spanish folk melodies, to name some.

The WSO is grateful for the support of concert sponsors Progressive Bank and Riesbeck Food Markets Inc.

“This all-orchestral program features light classics and virtuoso showpieces. It will be neat to highlight musicians from the orchestra in audience favorites such as Leroy Anderson’s ‘The Typewriter’ and Morton Gould’s ‘Pavanne.’Great show tunes by George M. Cohan such as ‘Mary’s A Grand Old Name and ‘Give My Regards to Broadway’ create an American emphasis for this Labor Day weekend concert,” Raphel shared about the program.

WSO board member and Oberlin Conservatory alum, Jay Frey, had the winning bid at the WSO’s biennial auction to guest conduct John Philip Sousa’s “Stars and Stripes Forever,” which concludes this year’s performance.

Tickets to the veranda reception can be purchased by calling the Wheeling Symphony office at 304-232-6191. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Capitol Theatre and the reception to the Capitol Ballroom.

Announcements will be made on the WSO website, Facebook page and by the office telephone by noon the day of the event.
