Spaghetti Dinner, Craft Sale To Benefit St. Joseph Congregation

Event Dedicated to Auxiliary Member Kathie Hoffman

The 28th annual spaghetti dinner and craft sale benefiting the Congregation of St. Joseph will be held from noon until    6 p.m. Nov. 6 at Mount St. Joseph,         located at 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling.

This year’s event is dedicated to Kathie Hoffman, who died in July. Hoffman, a member of the West Virginia auxiliary of the Congregation of St. Joseph, worked side by side with Waneta Acker, who died three weeks after last year’s dinner. Both women dedicated many hours to the event over the years.

The craft sale will again be held in the lower-level meeting room. Crafts being sold will include holiday decorations, baked goods, sauces, visual arts and stuffed animals. The crafters include Sisters Rosalie Bucci, Kathleen Durkin, Mary Alice Girrens, Marguerite O’Brien, Mary Ann Rosenbaum, Joan Singer and Gabriella Wagner, as well as several family and friends.

“Last year we served over 1,000 dinners,” said Sister Maria Porter, event co-chair. “It takes 240 pounds of pasta, 150 gallons of spaghetti sauce, 260 pounds of homemade sausage and over 3,500 hand-rolled meatballs to feed over 1,000 people.”

“The sisters are so grateful to all of our sponsors and the many area businesses for donating all of the food, supplies or funds for the food,” added Sister Marguerite O’Brien, event co-chair.

Donors include DiCarlo’s in Elm Grove; Jebbia’s Market; Paragon Monteverde; Cura, the sisters’ in-house food service; Tri-Mark SS Kemp; Altmeyer Funeral Homes; Wine and Beverage Merchants of West Virginia; Riesbeck’s Food Market; Coleman’s Fish Market; Miklas Meat Market and Pepsi.

Area restaurants donating the spaghetti sauce are Domino’s Pizza in Elm Grove, Generations Pub, Wheeling Hospital dietary department, Undo’s, Wheeling Country Club and Ye Olde Alpha. Many friends of the sisters also donate sauce for the event.

More than 200 volunteers help each year. Key Club members from Wheeling Central Catholic, Wheeling Park and Bishop Donahue high schools and Linsly School volunteer their time as part of their community service efforts. Several athletic teams from Wheeling Jesuit University and West Liberty University also volunteer their time throughout the day.

Shuttle service will be provided again this year by Altmeyer Funeral Homes and Good Shepherd Nursing Home. As always, take-out orders will be available by stopping in or calling 304-232-8160.

For those who are unable to attend the spaghetti dinner and craft sale but would like to make a donation, checks may be made payable to the Congregation of St. Joseph and sent to CSJ Spaghetti Dinner, 137 Mount St. Joseph Road, Wheeling, WV 26003.

All proceeds benefit the sisters’ general operating fund.
