Annual Victorian Christmas Tour at Elmhurst in Wheeling

Santa and Mrs. Claus are expected to be on hand to greet young and old alike at the annual Victorian Christmas Tour from 1-3 p.m. Saturday at Elmhurst, The House of Friendship, in Wheeling.

The historic Samuel S. Bloch mansion and the entire senior living residence  on the campus of Elmhurst at 1228 National Road has been opening its doors to the public at the holidays for four years to share the elegance of a Victorian Christmas, according to Jamie Crow, executive director.

“Elmhurst is magical at the holidays. Our residents enjoy sharing its beauty and the more than 20 uniquely decorated trees located throughout their home at the holiday season,” Crow said, adding, “We also hope all generations of families join us since Santa and Mrs. Claus will visit once again with treats for the youngsters.”

A grove of Christmas trees in Elmhurst’s family room is decorated with ornaments made by students at the partner-in-education schools — Wheeling Country Day School, St. Michael Parish School and Triadelphia Middle School, Crow noted. In addition, SMPS students will sing carols for the visitors.

Visitors are invited to tour the historic Bloch mansion and visit the other sections of the senior retirement assisted living residence. Many residents will open their doors to showcase their own holiday decorating, Crow noted, adding, “Our open house is becoming a family tradition.”

Although the event is free of charge, visitors are invited to bring a donation of personal care items for men and women for those aided by the local Heroes Helping Heroes organization that provides aid and support to military veterans, Crow explained.
