Students Lend A Helping Hand

Public schools in Ohio County are busy with many holiday programs that benefit everyone from soldiers to specific students to people in need in the community. In addition to Woodsdale Elementary School’s mitten tree projects, reported in this newspaper on Dec. 2, below is a list of holiday donation drives taking place throughout the district.

West Liberty Elementary School students and staff members are holding holiday projects to benefit Boatsie’s Boxes and the Wheeling Lions Club food drive. Third-graders are going to the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling to serve food and take blankets, mittens, scarves and gloves for the homeless. The school has made eight large baskets containing household items for West Liberty Elementary families in need, and the school donated 20 coats to the Kepner Funeral Home coat drive. The school is also holding its “Giving Tanks” program throughout the year to provide free gas cards for cancer patients traveling to and from treatment.

Bethlehem Elementary School is collecting items for the 100.5 Biggie “Christmas Kids” program. Students have made eight baskets with household items for Bethlehem Elementary families in need. Bridge Street Middle School is doing a food bag giveaway. The school’s staff members are making bags with two to three days worth of food for families in need. Bridge Street is also selecting a student to win school supplies and a new backpack. The giveaway date has not been finalized, but the announcement is expected to be made on either Dec. 19 or Dec. 20.

At Triadelphia Middle School, the Triadelphia REACH (Raiders Extend A Caring Hand) Club is collecting donations to provide an anonymous middle school student with a few things on his or her Christmas list. Student Council is having a canned food drive on the last day before holiday break. Triadelphia Middle School is taking part in “Shop with a Cop,” and three families have been recommended to shop with the Wheeling Police Department. The school is also taking part in Boatsie’s Boxes, which will ship gift stockings to soldiers overseas.

Steenrod Elementary School has been in contact with White Sulphur Springs Elementary School, and Steenrod students and staff members are doing a gently used toy and book drive to deliver to flood-ravaged Greenbrier County. Along with asking students to consider something they could donate, students are also being asked to write letters of support for those in the area impacted by flooding. The school’s holiday concert on Monday will include a flood-relief donation effort. Steenrod Elementary School also will donate non-perishable foods to be distributed locally. Steenrod “teacher/elves” will deliver school supplies on Dec. 20. Also, Steenrod fourth grade will collect donations to purchase items for children through the Salvation Army.

At Warwood School, each year the Warwood School Leo Club adopts a local family of children and provides Christmas presents for them. This year, Warwood students have selected three children ages 4, 7 and 10. The school is also collecting cash donations for a holiday family.

Wheeling Middle School is doing a canned food drive to benefit families in need.

The Wheeling Park High School social studies department is sponsoring a holiday toy drive. In cooperation with Student Council, toys will be organized and delivered to a local charity. Students will be making donations through social studies, but staff member are also encouraged to donate. The donations will be collected Tuesday.
