Artworks Features All Members

The January featured exhibit at Artworks Around Town in Wheeling will highlight works of many of the cooperative’s member artists. The All Members Show will open on First Friday, Jan. 6, with a Gallery Hop reception from 5:30-8 p.m. The exhibit will remain on display in the Upper Market house of Centre Market through January. Admission is free. Refreshments are provided at the reception.

On display will be the newest, the latest or work never shown by Artworks member artists.

The unusual artists’ cooperative, formed in 1998, is the only one left from more than 30 originally formed in West Virginia in the 1980s and 1990s, according to organizers. Up until earlier last year, there was still one other artists’ cooperative in Davis, but now Artworks is the sole survivor. There are 28 member artists.

The group of artist members of Artworks are from diverse backgrounds. Few members are ever full-time artists; they always have “day jobs.” It’s difficult to survive independently as a full-time artist. Artworks members include teachers, a psychologist, an accountant, a nurse, a beautician, a lawyer, a computer expert, a maintenance supervisor, a manager of a health department, an electrician and a carpenter. That’s only a few of the professions.

Visitors to the gallery in the Centre Market may be astounded by the variety and quality of the artists’ work displayed in the organization’s space. In the gallery space, the visitor will find paintings in oil, watercolor and acrylic in genres of abstract, realism and surrealism; photographs; gourd art; carvings of birds; pottery — both artistic and household; fiber art; wall tiles; collages; stained glass works; and jewelry designed and crafted by member artists.

This year, two small sitting areas were added to the gallery along with an extensive library of art books that can be read by visitors. There is also a small gift shop among all the other areas for browsing.

The gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Monday through Thursday and Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, except on First Friday, when it is open till 8 p.m.
