Special Activities

AARP

Greater Wheeling Area Chapter 824 of AARP will hold a luncheon meeting at Wheeling Park’s White Palace in the Teen Center at 11:15 a.m. Thursday. Reservations for members are required for the luncheon and can be made today by calling Eunice Lohr, 304-242-9452. Members who have made reservations and need to cancel must call Lohr today or they will be charged for the luncheon.

Bill Blazier, chapter president, will preside at a business meeting. Bill Bryson of Uniglobe Travel will talk about visits to national parks by motorcoach. Wayne Cunningham is working with Uniglobe Travel to set up some trips for members.

A table will be set up for members to share books. Several vendors will set up displays and present door prizes.

New members are welcome and need to call Eunice Lohr for reservations.

Historic Program

Events from Wheeling’s colorful past will be discussed at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., at 6 p.m. Monday when Rich Knoblich presents “Historic Wheeling.” The free program is aimed at adults and students.

Knoblich is the author of “Talking ‘Bout the Relatives: Tales That Grow Taller With Each Telling,” a collection of original Appalachian-styled tall tales, and articles in various publications. He is an active member of several storytelling organizations, performs at venues and festivals throughout the region and has served as a judge for the biggest liar contest at the annual Vandalia Gathering.

Lunch With Books

Jeanne Finstein of Wheeling will be at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday to share her experiences during a recent trip to Cuba. She arrived just days after the death of Fidel Castro.

Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Patrons may bring a bag lunch; beverages are provided.

Eastern Star

Miriam Chapter 1, Order of the Eastern Star, will meet at Monument Place, 91 Kruger St., Wheeling, at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday. Carolyn Nortemann, worthy matron, and Jim Shannon, worthy patron, will preside. Members are asked to donate ramen noodles for a backpack project. Alice and Tony Means will serve refreshments after the meeting.

International

Culture Fair

Buckeye Local High School is highlighting global birthday traditions during its International Culture Fair. “Birthday Celebrations Around the World” is the theme of the 12th annual fete to be held from 5-8 p.m. Wednesday in the school commons.

The event will include displays and a sampling of delicacies from 27 countries with student performances in the theater starting at 7 p.m. Tickets will be sold for a nominal cost to acquire items at the food tasting. Each country represented will include costumed students sharing information on birthday tradition and a display honoring its heritage.

Lecture

The Fort Henry Commemoration Speaker Series will continue at West Virginia Independence Hall, 1528 Market St., Wheeling, at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Wheeling historian Margaret Brennan will give a talk, “A Profile of Betty Zane, Heroine of Fort Henry.”

The program is free and open to the public. The Wheeling chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Fort Henry chapter of Sons of the American Revolution are sponsors of the series.

Black History Film

Black History Month will be celebrated at Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, 801 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville, with a film, “Roots of Resistance: The Story of the Underground Railroad,” to be shown at 7 p.m. Thursday. Admission is free.

The story of the flight to freedom is told through the words of escaped slaves and recollections of their descendants. The one-hour documentary was produced by the Public Broadcasting Service as part of the American Experience Series.

Lunch & Movie

The Follansbee branch of the Brooke County Public Library will show a film, “Arrival,” rated PG-13, at noon Tuesday. Patrons may bring a lunch; popcorn and water will be provided by the library. To reserve a seat, call the circulation desk, 304-527-0860.

Book Club

The Brooke County Public Library’s book club will meet at the library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, at 5 p.m. Thursday to discuss “Jane Eyre” by Charlotte Bronte. Participants will receive the February book, “Nightingale” by Kristin Hannah, at this meeting. The book club is free and open to the public.

Fundraiser

Family Service-Upper Ohio Valley will hold a fundraising night at Texas Roadhouse, 43 Fort Henry Road, Triadelphia, from 4-8 p.m. Thursday. When customers present a special invitation, the restaurant will donate 10 percent of total food purchases to the agency.

Shoes for

Homeless

The Marshall County Community Educational Outreach Service is sponsoring a “Shoes for the Homeless” project from Monday through March 20.

Slightly used or new boots or shoes for men, women and children may be donated at three locations: Bob’s Lunch and Shoe Sensations, both in Moundsville, and BB&T in Cameron. Shoes will be given to the Winter Freeze Shelter in Wheeling and the Greater Wheeling Coalition for the Homeless for distribution to homeless people. Spaghetti Dinner

A spaghetti dinner will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church’s dining hall, 204 Mound St., Tiltonsville, from noon to 3 p.m. next Sunday. Tickets may be purchased in advance by calling 740-859-4492. Homemade cream puffs also will be sold.

Quilt Raffle

Sistersville Center is holding a raffle for a homemade quilt. Tickets are available at the center until Feb. 28. For more information, call 304-652-1032.
