Wheeling Middle School students are currently involved in an exciting and far-reaching project.

Students in the Wheeling Middle classes of Renee Marchese and Jenny Craig were recently invited by Virginia Middle School in Virginia, Minn. to join The Great Mail Race. The project is a race to send letters to at least one school per state in the country. The goal of the project is to learn about all of the territories by the end of the year.

Marchese said she discussed The Great Mail Race with Craig, and they presented the project idea to their students. She said the students eagerly accepted the challenge. Marchese said the students enjoy The Great Mail Race because it incorporates research, geography and language arts. She said each student researched middle schools throughout the United States.

“We sent 50 letters challenging each of the middle schools we researched to participate,” Marchese said. “Our students included information about our class and the great state of West Virginia. Throughout the process, we learned a lot about West Virginia history and many West Virginia facts, and students were so excited to share that information with students across the country. I think it continues to be very rewarding for them.”

Craig said Wheeling Middle School has now received letters and state fact sheets from three of the schools it challenged to participate in The Great Mail Challenge. She said Wheeling Middle School students have enjoyed learning about other states and their histories and facts.

“It’s been really fun,” Craig said. “We have enjoyed comparing and contrasting other schools and communities to our own. We’ve even mapped each school with pins on our large U.S. map. We really look forward to receiving more letters in the coming weeks.”
