Civil War Roundtable

The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will meet in the auditorium of the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Tom Buckley will speak on “The November 1863 Federal Expeditions Against Lewisburg, W.Va., and the Battle of Droop Mountain.”

Relay for Life

The Ohio County Relay for Life committee will meet at West Virginia Northern Community College, Wheeling campus, at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

Film Showing

The Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., will present a “Think Outside the Book” film at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The feature will be “Loving,” rated PG-13, a historical drama based on the true story of Richard and Mildred Loving.

The film showing is free and open to the public. Attendees may bring snacks and seat cushions.

Lunch With Books

Carter Taylor Seaton will appear at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday to talk about her new book, “The Rebel in the Red Jeep: Ken Hechler’s Life in West Virginia Politics.” The biographer will recount a century of Hechler’s accomplishments.

Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Patrons may bring a bag lunch; complimentary beverages are provided.

People’s University

The People’s University course, “The First World War,” will conclude at the Ohio County Public Library’s auditorium, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at 7 p.m. Tuesday. The class is free and open to the public.

Dr. Hal Gorby, teaching assistant professor and director of undergraduate advising at West Virginia University, will be the instructor for the final session, “Wheeling Remembers the War.” He will examine how the war shaped the city for years to come.

Preservation Alliance

The South Wheeling Preservation Alliance will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3536 Eoff St., Wheeling, at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. In recognition of National Preservation Month, Deborah Griffin, senior preservation specialist, and Lisa Schmidtke, commercial designer, both employed by Heritage Architectural Associates of Wheeling, will be the featured guest speakers. They will share their ideas on preserving the neighborhood’s historic homes and business structures. They also will discuss some of their projects and current trends in preservation.

The South Wheeling Neighborhood Watch will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church from 6:30-7 p.m. Tuesday.

Wheeling Class of ’64

Wheeling High School Class of 1964 will hold its monthly gathering at Generations, 336 National Road, Wheeling, at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

Chester Arts Club

Members of the Chester Arts Club will plant flowers along Carolina Avenue and at the city building at 11 a.m. Wednesday. After planting, members will gather at Crickster’s Family Restaurant, 817 Carolina Ave., at 1 p.m. for lunch.

Program

Darla Spencer, registered professional archaeologist, will present “Early Native Americans in West Virginia: The Fort Ancient Culture” at Grave Creek Mound Archaeological Complex, 801 Jefferson Ave., Moundsville, at 7 p.m. Thursday. The program is free and open to the public.

The people known as Fort Ancient occupied the Ohio Valley including southern West Virginia between approximately A.D. 1000 and sometime in the late 1600s. Spencer’s presentation will describe what is currently known about the Fort Ancient people in West Virginia and their culture.

Spencer has researched the archaeology and early Native American history of West Virginia for more than 20 years. Her first book on the Fort Ancient culture of West Virginia was published in 2016.

Lunch & Movie

The Brooke County Public Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, will show the film, “Split,” rated PG-13, at noon Tuesday. Patrons may bring a lunch. Popcorn and water will be provided by the library. To reserve a seat, call the circulation desk, 304-737-1551.

Back Pain Class

The Brooke County Public Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, will offer a “Watch Your Back” back pain class, a Pathways to Wellness program by Marshall University, at noon Wednesday. Class space is limited and registration is required. To register, call the circulation desk, 304-737-1551.

Book Club

The book club of the Brooke County Public Library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, will meet at 5 p.m. Thursday to discuss “Look Again” by Lisa Scottoline. Participants will receive the June book, “Witness at Hawks Nest” by Dwight Harshbarger, at this meeting. The book club is free and open to the public.

CPR Class

A Family and Friends CPR Anytime class will be offered at Wheeling Hospital’s Howard Long Wellness Center at 11 a.m. Friday. This free program is for people who do not need a course completion card to satisfy a work requirement. It is not a certification course. For more information and to register, call 304-243-3932.

Patriotic Concert

A patriotic concert celebrating Memorial Day will be held at Mount Olivet United Methodist Church, 500 Fairmont Pike, at 3 p.m. next Sunday. Forty-seven singers from Heaven Bound Ministries will present the music. This group also presents the musical drama, “He’s Alive,” each spring in Wheeling.

Admission is free but a free-will offering will be accepted for the ministry. For more information, call 304-281-1367.

Memorial Day

The Wheeling chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution and the Fort Henry chapter of Sons of the American Revolution will conduct a brief wreath-laying and remembrance ceremony at Wheeling Park at 2 p.m. May 29 in observance of Memorial Day. The event is open to the public.

The ceremony will begin with posting of the colors and firing of a salute by a color guard in colonial dress. An invocation and benediction will be delivered along with a proclamation from the president general of the National Society, Sons of the American Revolution.

Paint-Sip-Eat

A paint-sip-eat fundraiser will be held June 9 at the Claysville Community Center, 212 Main St. A summer buffet dinner will be offered from 5:30-6:30 p.m. Sandy Hughey will teach an oil painting class from 6:30-8:30 p.m.
