Special Activities

CEOS Council

The Ohio County Community Educational Outreach Service Council will meet at Elm Grove United Methodist Church, 125 Kruger St., Wheeling, at 10 a.m. Monday. Any officer or committee chair who cannot attend the meeting is asked to send an alternate.

Civil War Roundtable

The Ohio Valley Civil War Roundtable will meet in the auditorium of the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at 6:30 p.m. Monday. Sam Waters, founder of the Civil War Preservation Project of Ohio, will give a presentation.

In 2015, project volunteers located the site of a skirmish between Confederate cavalry of Gen. John Hunt Morgan and pursuing Union forces in Carroll County, Ohio. In 2016, volunteers located the grave site of one of Morgan’s troopers in Morgan County, Ohio. The artifacts recovered in these investigations will be studied, preserved and donated to local historical societies.

The public may attend Waters’ presentation detailing the investigations and the recoveries. The event is free but donations to the Civil War Preservation Project of Ohio will be accepted.

Relay for Life

The Ohio County Relay for Life committee will meet at West Virginia Northern Community College in Wheeling at 6:30 p.m. Monday. The deadline to order a Hope Club T-shirt is Friday. The deadline to register for the survivor dinner is July 11.

Preservation Alliance

The South Wheeling Preservation Alliance will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church, 3536 Eoff St., Wheeling, at 7:15 p.m. Tuesday. Dorothy Ward will speak on the LaBelle Nail Factory, which her great-great-grandfather helped to build. She also will tell the history of 29th Street and share stories of underground caves, mansions and baseball. The South Wheeling Neighborhood Watch will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church from 6:30-7 p.m. Tuesday.

Film Showing

The Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., will present a “Think Outside the Book” film at 6 p.m. Tuesday. The feature will be “Fences,” rated PG-13, a drama based on the play by August Wilson. The film showing is free and open to the public. Attendees may bring their own snacks and seat cushions.

Lunch With Books

Author Susan Jones will appear at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday to discuss her book, “Bill Stewart: In His Own Words,” about the late West Virginia University head football coach. His wife, Karen Stewart, will accompany Jones.

Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Attendees may bring a bag lunch; complimentary beverages are provided.

Summer Reading

The summer reading program at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., will feature painting with Lisa Zukoff at 11 a.m. Tuesday and a “Bob the Builder” program at 11 a.m. Thursday.

The summer reading program at the Benwood-McMechen Public Library, 201Marshall St., McMechen, will feature a snowman story and activity at 2 p.m. Tuesday.

All of the programs are free and open to the public.

Summer Coffeehouse

ArtsLink’s summer coffeehouse series continues with singer-guitarist Gary Eller presenting a free concert on the Francis Creative Arts Center lawn, Maple Avenue and Washington Street, New Martinsville, at 7 p.m. Thursday. Light refreshments will be served. Guests are encouraged to bring lawn chairs.

Eller will perform Wetzel County historically based songs. He grew up in Wetzel County, then lived in Ohio and Georgia prior to a 30-year career in nuclear science and engineering at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. In 2004, he retired to Pickles Butte near Nampa, Idaho.

In addition to musical entertainment, an exhibit by Tyler County resident and art teacher Hilda Steen will be presented. Her works will be available for purchase. Her students, including Makayla Haught, Alice Lemasters, Bari Lehni and Ann Hendley, also will have their paintings on display. The exhibit will continue from 2-4 p.m. next Sunday.

Book Club

The Brooke County Public Library’s book club will meet at the main library, 945 Main St., Wellsburg, at 5 p.m. Thursday to discuss “Witness at Hawks Nest” by Dwight Harshbarger. Participants will receive the July book, “Killing In The Hills” by Julia Keller, at this meeting. The book club is free and open to the public.

Lunch & Movie

The Follansbee branch of the Brooke County Public Library will show the film, “Before I Fall,” rated PG-13, at noon Friday. Participants may bring a lunch. Popcorn and water will be provided by the library. To reserve a seat, call the circulation desk, 304-527-0860.

Summer Reading

The “Build a Better World” summer reading program at the Brooke County Public Library and Follansbee branch is open to young people, preschool through eighth grade, with programs, prizes, story hours and other activities. “Build a Better World” also is the theme of the library’s adult and young adult summer reading program.

All programs are free of charge. The 2017 summer reading program is sponsored by Wellsburg Elks Lodge 1553.

Men’s Screenings

Free health care screenings for men will be conducted at Wheeling Hospital’s Howard Long Wellness Center from 9 a.m. to noon Monday. Screenings for osteoporosis, carotid artery and hypertension will be offered.

Physician referrals and appointments are not required for the tests. No special preparation is necessary. For more information, call the Men’s Health Center at Wheeling Hospital at 304-243-8813.

CPR Class

A Family and Friends CPR Anytime class will be offered at Wheeling Hospital’s Howard Long Wellness Center at 11 a.m. Friday.

This free program is for people who do not need a course completion card to satisfy a work requirement. It is not a certification course. For more information and to register, call 304-243-3932.

Parkinson’s Program

A program on the Lee Silverman Voice Treatment for Parkinson’s disease patients will be held at Wheeling Hospital’s conference rooms C and D at 5 p.m. Wednesday. The program for treating Parkinson’s disease has two components: BIG, a physical therapy portion targeting whole body movements for daily living activities, and LOUD, a speech portion that targets loud, clear speech.

Wheeling Hospital has both speech and physical therapists certified in this program. Reservations are required and can be made by calling 304-243-3307.
