Garden Of Hope Honors Patients

Photos Provided Margi Roberts provides tender loving care for her Garden of Hope at East Ohio Regional Hospital. She works in the hospital pharmacy, is a 32-year cancer survivor and also serves as the facilitator of the hospital’s breast cancer support group.

MARTINS FERRY — Margi Roberts calls it the Garden of Hope in honor and memory of all the breast cancer patients she has met during her 27 years as the facilitator of the breast cancer support group at East Ohio Regional Hospital.

Roberts is a 32-year cancer survivor. She donates her time to facilitate this group that has been in existence for over 27 years, but that wasn’t enough. About 10 years ago, she was walking past an area outside the hospital where she works in the pharmacy department and a great idea came to her.

“I walked past this area and thought it could use some sprucing up. I decided I would like to plant a garden there and went to administration to see if this was possible. They gave me their support and approval and that was the beginning of the Garden of Hope,” Roberts said.

This labor of love began with hauling two tons of gravel to place in the area. Every year, beginning in late February or early March, she prepares the area for planting. She either buys flowers or gets them donated. She plants, weeds and waters the garden from spring season through the fall. The members of the support group are like family and they provide help, too.

The breast cancer support group meets in the Ruth Brant Maguire Room at EORH from 6-8 p.m. on the second Wednesday of each month. It is open to any breast cancer patient currently in treatment or who is a survivor. Participants may bring a friend or family member with them to the meeting.

From her support group to her Garden of Hope, Roberts’ goal is to provide care and support to women in the Ohio Valley. To get more information about this group, call Roberts at 740-633-1656.
