Newcomers Club

The Wheeling Newcomers Club will hold a luncheon meeting at Wheeling Country Club at 10:30 a.m. Thursday. Peter Holloway, vice president and financial adviser at Hazlett, Burt and Watson, will be the guest speaker.

Wheeling High School Class of 1950 will hold its monthly luncheon at Perkins Restaurant, 680 National Road, Wheeling, at 1 p.m. Monday. The event is open to all former students, friends and visitors.

St. Joseph’s Class of ’54

St. Joseph’s Academy Class of 1954 will hold its monthly luncheon at Happy Garden Chinese Restaurant, 1726 Wheeling Ave., Glen Dale, at 1 p.m. Tuesday. The event is open to all former students, friends and visitors.

Genealogical Society

The Cumberland Trail Genealogical Society meeting, planned originally for Monday, has been rescheduled for April 23 at 6:30 pm. in the meeting room at the St. Clairsville Public Library. All meetings are free and open to the public.

Member Larry McNear will talk about his family trip to Ireland. McNear is chairman of the Family Tree Makers Users group; he also will discuss this software program.

Sand Hill Club

The Sand Hill Community Educational Outreach Service Club will meet at the home of Garnie McGlumphy at noon Tuesday. Barb Kilgore will serve as co-hostess. A business meeting will be held after lunch. Nancy Hartzell will present a lesson, “Slow Cooking in a Fast-Paced World.”

Lunch With Books

The Wheeling Poetry Series will present a reading by poet Mary B. Moore of Huntington at Lunch with Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday. Moore has published three major collections and won four poetry contests in the past two years.

Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Attendees may bring a bag lunch; complimentary beverages are provided.

Ormet Retirees

Ormet Retirees Club, Local 5724, will meet at the former Hannibal Grade School at 1 p.m. Tuesday. Union workers who retired from Ormet may join the club and are encouraged to attend the meeting.

Pasta Bar

Beech Bottom Community Christian Church, Third and High streets, will hold a free pasta bar dinner from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday. A donation box will be available for anyone who wants to make a contribution. Daughters of American Revolution

The Wheeling chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at Wheeling Park’s Stone Room at 11:30 a.m. Wednesday. State Regent Malinda Davis will speak on the Gold Star Mothers project.

The Fort Henry Piecemakers quilt guild will meet at St. Mark Lutheran Church, 141 Kruger St., Wheeling, at 7 p.m. Thursday. A program will be presented on Pillowcases for Smiles. A demonstration will be given on making an apron from a man’s shirt.

Woman’s Club

The Moundsville Woman’s Club will meet at Generations Restaurant, 336 National Road, Wheeling, at noon Friday. Yvonne McKinney will present a program on the Center for Organ Recovery and Education. Connie Morris is the program chairwoman.

Sonnie Groft, Marilyn Meyers, Myrtle Garten, Denise Freeland, Kathy Eddy, Loretta Remke and Linda Snodgrass will serve as hostesses. President Cindy Prettyman will conduct a business meeting.

Film Showings

The Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., will present two “Think Outside the Book” films during National Library Week. “Darkest Hour,” rated PG-13, will be shown at 6 p.m. Tuesday and “Wonder,” rated PG, will be shown at 4 p.m. Thursday.

The film showings are free and open to the public. Attendees may bring their own snacks and seat cushions.

Poetry Reading

Professional storyteller and author Andy Fraenkel will present a program at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday. He will offer a dramatic retelling of Coleridge’s famous work, “Rime of the Ancient Mariner,” and share other poems to celebrate National Poetry Month.

The event is free and open to the public. It is aimed at adults and school-age children. Light refreshments will be available.

Support Group

NAMI of Greater Wheeling’s adult mental health support group will meet at Marian House Drop-In Center, 115 18th St., Wheeling, from 6-7 p.m. Thursday. A licensed counselor leads the group. For more information, call Amy Gamble, 304-281-4494.

Genealogical Society

The Wheeling Area Genealogical Society will meet in the auditorium at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at 1 p.m. Saturday.

The group is sponsoring a monthly lecture series, “Silent Cities of the Dead,” to focus on cemeteries in the Wheeling area. Programs are free and open to the public.

For Saturday’s program, Earl Nicodemus will give a presentation on West Liberty Cemetery. Nicodemus is a retired West Liberty University professor, West Virginia History Hero, historical storyteller, trustee of the old West Liberty Cemetery from 1985 to 2017 and the author of numerous articles on the history of West Liberty and the cemetery.

Collegiate Alumnae

Performance

In celebration of Eastertide, Franciscan University of Steubenville’s Schola Cantorum Franciscana will perform “Christ, My Hope, Is Risen!” with the Academy Chamber Orchestra of Pittsburgh. The concert will take place in Christ the King Chapel on campus at 7:30 p.m. Friday. The performance is free and open to the public.

Style Show-Luncheon

Miriam Chapter 1, Order of the Eastern Star, will hold its annual style show and salad luncheon at Monument Place, 91 Kruger St., Wheeling, from 11 a.m. to 2 p,m. April 26. Ticket proceeds will go to the group’s civic projects including a backpack project (providing weekend meals for local school children); charities related to asthma, cancer, heart disease and wounded veterans and the Shriners Transportation Fund.

Bioethics Screening

“My Name is Bill W.,” a movie based on the true story of a struggle for sobriety, will be screened from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday at Wheeling Hospital’s auditorium as part of its bioethics series.
