Wheeling Law Firm Donates To Support Lung Cancer Screening

MORGANTOWN — Hartley Law Group, PLLC, of Wheeling and Charleston, has donated $500,000 to the West Virginia University Cancer Institute in support of a mobile lung cancer screening unit, LUCAS.

The gift will support the WVU Cancer Institute in repurposing and refurbishing a mobile unit into a lung cancer screening mobile unit, which was previously used for the Bonnie’s Bus program.

“The Hartley Law Group is proud to support the Cancer Institute in its initiative to combat one of the leading causes of death in West Virginia,” said Dean Hartley, WVU alumnus and founding partner at Hartley Law Group. “We are excited to support this mobile unit with the hope it will provide access to those who need it, and assist in early detection and prevention of lung cancer.”

In 2017, more than 1,000 West Virginians died from lung cancer. The goal of the mobile unit is to assist in early detection of lung cancer, providing better long-term outcomes to patients.

“We are facing a cancer epidemic in our state,” said Richard Goldberg, MD, director of the WVU Cancer Institute. “This new mobile lung cancer screening program allows us to have a greater reach in rural areas and provide lung cancer screening services to the community. If we can detect these cancers early, we can make a significant impact in the number of related deaths.”

While patients must meet the National Lung Cancer Screening guidelines in order to receive care, LUCAS will serve those in 42 counties across the state who are uninsured, underinsured or who carry private insurance.

The gift from Hartley Law Group will aid in the reconstruction of the original unit, which is expected to take about six months. A Certificate of Need application has been filed with the West Virginia Health Care Authority.

Over the past 37 years, the Hartley Law Group (www.hartleylawgrp.com) has represented working men and women who have developed lung cancer as a result of exposure to various cancer-causing agents in the workplace.

To support the reconstruction of the mobile lung screening unit or to make a gift to the WVU Cancer Institute, please contact Scarlett Schneider, PhD, senior director of development, at 304-293-7732 or scarlett.schneider@hsc.wvu.edu.

The gift was made through the WVU Foundation, the non-profit organization that receives and administers private donations on behalf of the University.
