Laughlin Memorial Chapel Plans Summer Jam for Local Kids
WHEELING — Laughlin Memorial Chapel is accepting applications for their Summer Jam program. Summer Jam runs from June 17 to July 12 and is a free program offered to students who have completed kindergarten through fifth grade. It runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and children receive breakfast, lunch, and afternoon snacks.
Program Coordinator Judi Saunders said this year’s theme is “Mission I’m Possible.” Children will be divided into classes at two levels — a kindergarten through third grade group and a fourth and fifth grade group. The two groups will each read an appropriate novel during the morning session and participate in Bible lessons. There will be four focal Scriptures including these paraphrases: Love Your Selfie, Kid Power, Am I Worth it?, and #I’mpossible.
Summer Jam afternoons will be filled with many activities. On Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, the children will go swimming at either Wheeling Park or Grand Vue Park. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, the Wheeling Recreation Department will complete an hour of arts and crafts.
“It’s an awesome program for the kids,” Saunders said. “It’s free for the families. It’s a safe place for the kids to be. With Summer Jam, along with our regular school program, we involve reading and literacy activities and help the kids understand there is more to life than just what they are seeing around them in their usual surroundings. We try to give them a wide variety of exposure to new activities and ideas. I like the program because we involve the students in a lot of different things.”
At the end of the four weeks, the Summer Jam team takes the children on a special field trip to the Carnegie Science Center.
The application can be found at www.laughlinmemorialchapel.org. Applications must be turned in to Laughlin Memorial Chapel as soon as possible or no later than June 4. Priority is given to children enrolled in Afterschool Jam. Space is limited.
