Valley Hospice’s 15th annual memorial butterfly releases will be held at Wheeling Park’s White Palace at 6 p.m. Aug. 12 and at Steubenville Country Club at 6 p.m. Aug. 14.

The events are open to anyone who has lost a loved one. Attendees also may submit their loved one’s name and/or photograph to be included in a memorial slideshow.
The Stevens Puppets troupe will present two shows of “Goldilocks and the Three Bears” on Monday in Marshall County.
The first show will be at 11 a.m. at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St. The second performance, for the Benwood-McMechen Library, will be held at 2 p.m. in the Kubeck Room at the Benwood-McMechen Housing Authority, 2200 Marshall St., Benwood.
The performances will feature fully jointed, hand-carved and painted wooden marionettes. The programs are suitable for all ages. Both events are free and open to the public.
Each performance will last about 45 minutes, with a brief demonstration after the show.
Professional storyteller Alan Irvine of Pittsburgh will present “Homestead: 1892” at the Moundsville-Marshall County Public Library, 700 Fifth St., at 6:30 p.m. Monday.
The event is free and open to the public. The program is aimed at adults but would be suitable for older youth as well.
Irvine will share dramatic stories, from different points of view, drawn from the events and people associated with the historic Homestead Strike of 1892.
Lunch With Books
Author Peter L. Belmonte will visit Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library, 52 16th St., Wheeling, at noon Tuesday to talk about his book, “Play Ball!: Doughboys and Baseball During the Great War.”
Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Attendees may bring a bag lunch; complimentary beverages are provided.
“Bobby’s Books: Make a Difference in the World” is the topic for a Lunch & Learn workshop at Harrison Community Hospital’s cafeteria in Cadiz from noon to 1 p.m. Thursday.
The workshop will feature Wendy Lawlis, a Valley Hospice certified Bobby’s Books trainer. She will discuss how to use books to help build a child’s coping skills.
The event is free to the public. Attendees may bring their own lunch or can purchase one in the cafeteria. A snack and beverages will be provided. Reservations are not needed.
St. Jude Catholic Church, 710 Jefferson Ave., Glen Dale, will hold a fish fry event from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday. Take-out orders also will be available. Customers can call 845-2646 for local delivery if ordered by 10 a.m. for lunch and by 3 p.m. for dinner.
The summer reading program, “A Universe of Stories,” at the Brooke County Public Library and its Follansbee branch features space-themed programs.
“Reading Is Out of This World” storytime, with space-related crafts and a review of all skills in astronaut training, will be offered at the Follansbee branch at noon Monday and at the Wellsburg library at 11 a.m. Wednesday.
A summer space movie, “Fly Me to the Moon,” rated G, will be shown at the Follansbee site at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
A Recon Rover program, for children age 8 and older, will be offered at the Wellsburg library at noon Tuesday.

Mingo Community Days
The annual Mingo Community Days celebration will take place in Mingo Junction Thursday through next Sunday, Aug. 4.
Events will kick off at noon Thursday with the unveiling of a mural depicting the 1984 movie “Reckless.” The rendering will be located at the Townhouse Bar and Grill, 530 Commercial Ave.
The celebration continues with a dinner, at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Mingo Knights of Columbus, which combines the film’s recognition with the Community Days awards program. Movie memorabilia will be available for viewing, purchase and auction. Attendees will view a documentary about the making of the drama.
More Community Days activities are in store at Aracoma Park over the weekend with a variety of events for everyone. Offerings include food and craft vendors, music and children’s rides and games. Gates at the park open at 4 p.m. Friday. Entertainment is planned from 6:15-9 p.m.
Classic vehicles will be displayed from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m. Saturday. A parade will begin at noon. The high school band will then take the stage while Mingo Idol will spotlight local talent at 1 p.m. Other entertainment will be presented from 3-9 p.m.
The Two Chiefs District of the Boy Scouts’ Ohio River Valley Council will hold a rain boat regatta on stage for children at noon next Sunday. Performances will be offered from 1-5 p.m.
