Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra Concert Set
WHEELING — Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra will hold its annual fall concert, featuring both the Sinfonietta and the Philharmonic orchestras. The performance will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at Vance Memorial Presbyterian Church in Wheeling. This concert is free and open to the public.
The Sinfonietta, composed of middle school-aged students, is co-led by both the band and string teachers from Triadelphia Middle School in Wheeling and will perform an eclectic range of music. “We are working hard and learning to blend our two worlds, band and strings, to create something symphonic,” said Rayce Leib, co-conductor of the Sinfonietta. “The kids are playing a wide array of repertoire including film music from ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’ and ‘Jurassic Park,’ and Britney Spears’ pop hit ‘Toxic.'”
The Philharmonic orchestra, which features area high school students, will play Alexander Borodin’s ‘In the Steppes of Central Asia,’ ‘The Entrance of the Queen of Sheba’ by George Fredrick Handel, and Richard Meyer’s ‘Ghosts of Brandenburg.’
“The symphonic poem that Borodin wrote has become a universal and timeless concert favorite,” said Ben Podolski, conductor of the Philharmonic. “The music is crammed full of great tunes. Handel’s string sinfonia selection from ‘The Entrance of the Queen of Sheba’ was notably performed at the London 2012 Olympic Games. Featured will be the addition of flute and oboe as the WSYO expands its scope to include fine young wind players. Finally, Meyer’s ‘Ghosts of Brandenburg’ is a tour de force that demonstrates the young players’ increasing skill and musicality. The WSYO invites you and your family and friends to join them for what is sure to be an enjoyable evening that celebrates hopeful youth and adventurous music-making.
The concert is free, but donations are appreciated to help the Wheeling Symphony Youth Orchestra continue its tradition of providing a tuition-free opportunity for its members and to enable them to perform free concerts to the public each year.
