It’s the Ohio Valley’s very own version of Comic-Con Saturday

WHEELING — The Wheeling YWCA’s Cultural Diversity and Community Outreach department will be throwing the area’s only Mini-Con on Saturday, May 25.

The event takes place from noon to 5 p.m on the second floors of the Wheeling YWCA at 1100 Chapline S.

If you didn’t have the luck of attending last year; you may ask yourself, “What’s a Mini-Con?” Well, it’s the Ohio Valley’s own scaled-down version of a Comic-Con or Comic Book Convention. This a chance to highlight, showcase and celebrate the culture of comic books, graphic novels, action figures and animation. There will be vendor tables, artist and maybe even a celebrity guest or two. Admission is merely a suggested donation of your choice, but there will be plenty to do, see, experience and purchase.

This year’s celebrity guest at the YWCA Mini-Con will be Rob Garrison, an incredibly talented actor who was born in Wheeling and has appeared in many film and television roles such as “The Karate Kid” and “The Karate Kid 2,” “Iron Eagle,” “Brubaker” and “McGuyver.”

Garrison can currently be seen on the web-based YouTube series “Cobra Kai.” The series is in its third season and has had more than 22 million views.

And if that’s not enough, there’s a host of the other amazing folks and features at Mini-Con, including: New Dimension Comics — Ohio Valley, Clutch Gaming, Ohio Valley Batman, The Outer Rim Praxeum Lightsaber School, Showtime Championship Wrestling Alliance, Emma’s Art Things, Scott Hanson, W.A.R. (We Are Role players), Amara Art, Joshua Bommer, B&D Comics and Collectibles, Wheeling Threads, Oculus Graphics, Luke Novel, T.J. Freeman, Nathan Mathis, Smart Center Market and many more.

There also will be a costume contest, which has been upgraded a bit this year. There will be the usual age brackets. The costume contest winner in the bracket for ages 12 and under will win a special YWCA Wheeling surprise bag, ages 13-18 will win two free movie tickets to the Marquee Cinemas Highlands 14, ages 18 and up will win a $25 Sheetz card, and new this year, an overall winner — judged on detail, authenticity and originality — will receive an Xbox One X.
