Dr. Dino to Visit Good Zoo
Dr. Dino from the Florida Brevard Zoo will visit Oglebay’s Good Zoo Saturday and Sunday.
“This is a great opportunity to meet a real dinosaur hunter and learn fascinating facts about these prehistoric animals,” Penny Miller, director of the Good Zoo, said. “You’ll also hear some amazing dino stories and get the chance to touch actual dinosaur bones.”
Dr. Dino will be available from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. both days.
A special Cretaceous Cookout is scheduled from 6:30-8:30 p.m. Saturday.
“The cookout will include a special guided tour of the zoo’s dinosaur exhibit with Dr. Dino plus favorite picnic foods including hamburgers, hot dogs, and corn on the cob,” Miller said.
Dinos and Doughnuts is scheduled for 8:30-10 a.m. Saturday and Sunday. Dinos and Doughnuts will include a light breakfast of doughnuts and pastries, assorted cereals, fruit, juice, coffee, tea and hot chocolate, plus a guided tour of the zoo’s dinosaurs with Dr. Dino.
Space is limited for the cookout and breakfast events. Reservations can be made by completing the reservation form found on the Good Zoo website at www.oglebay-resort.com/ goodzoo or by calling the zoo education department at 304-243-4068. Good Zoo members receive a discount.
Dr. Dino is Chris DeLorey, the director of education for the Brevard Zoo located in Melbourne, Fla. The Brevard Zoo is a 72-acre zoological facility that combines interactive visitor experiences with animals in a naturalistic setting. DeLorey spent five years with Busch Gardens, then went into the classroom teaching middle school science for seven years. While teaching, he did consulting work with museums, zoos and national parks, developing educational hands-on tools to enhance the visitor experiences. He joined the Brevard Zoo in 1996.
As an avid dinosaur and fossil history buff, DeLorey has integrated the past into the present connecting the living collection to both the past and the future.
He began following the use of animatronic dinosaurs in zoos and museums in the 1980s.
At the same time, he began making trips out west to work on various dinosaurs sites throughout Colorado, Utah and Wyoming.
Since 2006, DeLorey has worked closely with the Billings Dinosaur Company to help develop animatronic dinosaurs that excite the imagination of children and adults.
Working in partnership with Billings, the Brevard Zoo has led multiple trips out west collecting dinosaur material to use in educational programming at various zoos and museums.
The Good Zoo’s special exhibit of animatronic dinosaurs this summer include a stegosaurus, edmontonia, suchomimus, amargasaurus and her baby. The zoo is open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.
Admission is charged; Good Zoo members and ages 2 and under are admitted free.
