Life of Moses Fleetwood Walker Subject of Lunch With Books
Stark State College instructor Craig Brown will discuss the life of Moses Fleetwood Walker at noon Tuesday at Lunch With Books at the Ohio County Public Library.
Brown is leading an effort to create an official day to honor Moses Fleetwood Walker, the first African American to play major league baseball, many years before Jackie Robinson. Walker was born in Mt. Pleasant, Ohio. He was not only a baseball player, but also a businessman in the Ohio Valley.
Brown and his students believe that Walker deserves to be honored with a special day, so that future generations will know what he accomplished against all odds.
Right now, the group has the legislation written and the support of Representative Stephen Slesnick of Canton. However, they are seeking the public’s help, and they ask supporters to go the Moses Fleetwood Walker Day Facebook page and “LIKE” it.
Lunch With Books programs are free and open to the public. Patrons are invited to bring a bag lunch; free beverages are served.
