Pair With Child in Hand Arrested in Robbery

STEUBENVILLE — Two people were arrested by City Police Wednesday after they tried to conceal merchandise in a diaper bag at Wal-Mart and one suspect took off running with a 9-month-old child.

Police reported Willis Stackhouse, 18, no fixed address and Latasha Birden, 19, of 815 Heritage Place, were seen at Wal-Mart around 3:40 p.m. Wednesday with an infant and large diaper bag. A store loss prevention officer said Stackhouse and Birden put various merchandise in the diaper bag and attempted to leave the store without paying, police reported.

The loss prevention officer confronted the pair and Birden hit the Wal-Mart worker with the diaper bag and tried to bite him, police reported. Birden was subdued and she dropped the bag, police reported.

Stackhouse took off running with the child and went over the hillside into a wooded area, police reported. He was found by officers with the child near Lauretta Drive and taken into custody, according to reports.

Stackhouse was charged with child endangerment, obstructing official business and complicity to robbery. Birden was charged with robbery. Stackhouse was in jail today on a $10,000 bond. The bond for Birden is $5,000. Both are scheduled to appear today in municipal court for an arraignment.

Police reported the child was taken to Trinity Medical Center West for a check up and turned over to the Jefferson County Department of Job and Family Services, Children Services Division.
