ST. CLAIRSVILLE — An assault Tuesday in the Union Local school district required medical treatment for a student, according to a Belmont County sheriff’s report.

The mother of a Union Local Middle School student told sheriff’s official at about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday that her son had been assaulted earlier that day allegedly by a Union Local High School student. The woman said the injuries her son suffered necessitated treatment at a local dentist’s office.

Today, Union Local Middle School Principal Dan Wesson said the middle school student is back at school today. He said the middle school student was punched by a Union Local High School student. Wesson said he believes the victim is about two years younger than his assailant.

Union Local High School Principal Joel Davia said today that the high school student is being punished, but he could not disclose the details of the reprimand. He said the assault occurred near a gymnasium, and it reportedly was prompted by “name calling.”

Union Local High School and Union Local Middle School are part of one large complex at 66859 Belmont-Morristown Road. The two buildings are connected, and Davia said the schools share some classrooms, and students from both schools pass in the halls.
