Woman Dies Following Fire
A Wednesday evening fire on Ninth Street in Moundsville claimed the life of an elderly woman and had crews at the scene for more than three hours.
Moundsville City Fire Chief Noel Clarke said a call was received just after 8 p.m. Wednesday for a fire at 1414 N. Ninth St. Crews from the Moundsville City Fire Department, Moundsville Volunteer Fire Department, Tri-State Ambulance and the Salvation Army responded. They learned the home was occupied by Margaret Trayon, the 87-year-old female resident of the home, and acted quickly to remove her from the home.
“They did a pretty good job of getting the fire under control and getting her out,” Clarke said.
The woman was transported to Reynolds Memorial Hospital in Glen Dale, where she later died.
Crews remained on scene for a little more than three hours working to extinguish the blaze. The exact cause of the fire is unknown, though Clarke said it is believed the blaze started on the first floor in a living room area where the victim was at the time. He added that it did receive minor smoke and fire damage, but the structure was not completely destroyed.
“By no means is it a complete loss,” he said.
Clarke said any fire that claims the life of a community member is always hard for all parties involved.
“Anytime a situation like this happens, it’s tragic for the community,” he said.
A representative of the state fire marshal was expected to be on scene Thursday to help determine the cause of the blaze.
