Uses For Property Considered

Martins Ferry Mayor Phil Wallace updated City Council on proposed use city-owned property during a recent meeting.

Wallace said he and Development Director Stanley Stein recently met with representatives of the architectural firm Burgess & Niple concerning brownfield cleanup at the site. They discussed property the city recently acquired on First Street near the Ohio River, particularly about a burned-out building on the site and what can be done to get it torn down.

Wallace said the firm recommended seeking brownfield money on a regional basis to possibly bring in about $1 million. Wallace said he plans to meet with Sue Douglass from the Community Improvement Corp. and the Belmont County commissioners about how to

Wallace also said he’d received bids for survey work on the property, the lowest of which came in at $2,450 from A.J. Smith in Bridgeport. Wallace asked for a voice vote to appropriate money for the survey work. The motion passed 5-0, as Councilmen Bruce Shrodes and Bill Weekley were absent.
