Great Day To Hit the Links
On hillsides where one might normally see children sled riding this time of year, more than 30 golfers had played nine holes of golf by mid-afternoon Monday at the Wheeling Park Golf Course, enjoying sunny skies skies and mild temperatures.
Wheeling Park Operations Manager Nat Goudy said the day after Christmas is the time of year when he is used to seeing just the regulars on the course; however, the nice weather Monday brought out quite a few more people.
Temperatures climbed into the mid-40s by mid-afternoon, with bright sunshine making it feel much warmer.
One foursome of local golfers said they couldn’t have had more ideal weather conditions for golfing this time of year.
“There is a very light wind, the sunshine is nice and warm, the course is all green – you can’t go wrong. … We’re real fortunate that the snow is coming tomorrow and we’re out today,” Ed Bowman of Wheeling said with a smile. “We beat the storm.”
Sporting a WVU sweatshirt, Larry Rogers of Wheeling said, “We are all Mountaineers – we’re playing when we can play, and being able to play on the 26th of December is marvelous. … So we’re just enjoying every day we can.”
Goudy said he is used to seeing golfers on the course under just about any weather conditions.
Goudy said as long as they can see the grass, the golfers are permitted to use the course. He said, however, if the course is too wet, officials don’t permit the carts to go out on the course. He said the course is open year-round.
