Police Cruiser Collides With Pickup Truck; Woman Injured
WHEELING – Emergency personnel transported one woman to a local hospital with minor injuries after the vehicle she was traveling in was struck by a Wheeling police cruiser Friday morning.
According to West Virginia State Police Cpl. James Dean, the driver of the pickup truck was making a left turn from Cypress Avenue onto National Road around 9 a.m. Friday when it collided with the cruiser, which was traveling east.
Dean said a green light gave the pickup truck the right of way, but the cruiser was responding to a call and had its emergency lights activated. The cruiser struck the front end of the truck on the passenger side of the vehicle.
The passenger in the pickup truck suffered minor injuries and was transported to a local hospital by Wheeling Fire Department emergency personnel, Dean said, while the two officers in the cruiser and the driver of the truck were not injured in the accident.
Dean said the driver of the truck will not be cited.
Wheeling Police Chief Shawn Schwertfeger said his department will follow protocol and conduct an internal investigation of the accident.
