Realtors Battle Hunger

WHEELING – The Wheeling Board of Realtors helped battle local hunger by donating more than 40 bags of non-perishable goods for the annual Neighbors Helping Neighbors food drive.

In their third year of participation, members of the board including Paull Associates, Harvey Goodman Realtors, First Choice Realtors, City Wide Realty, Howard Hanna Real Estate Services, Century 21 Vargo Real Estate, Town and Country Properties and Wetzel Valley Agencies collected items in their individual offices throughout November to donate.

“Our members are a great bunch,” Glenda Gasparine, executive officer of the board, said. “Anything we can do to reach out to the community we try to find.”

According to Gasparine, the Wheeling Board of Realtors has an extensive community outreach program in addition to the food drive, including giving Christmas gifts to children in foster care as part of the Youth Advocate Outreach program, donating school supplies to North Wheeling and donating items to local charities that serve the homeless.

“Wherever there’s a need, we want to help,” Gasparine said.

Neighbors Helping Neighbors Food Drive is a local nonprofit coordinated by Lisa Werner of WesBanco every November that serves local charities and food banks such as the Soup Kitchen of Greater Wheeling, St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church, Hope United Methodist Church, YWCA, Laughlin Memorial Chapel and the Catholic Neighborhood Center. The food drive is in its fifth year and continues through Nov. 30.

“I’m very passionate about feeding folks and the community,” Werner said. “I’ve been volunteering for about 14 years, and the food drive addresses a fundamental basic need. It’s really touches my heart.”

Neighbors Helping Neighbors is a partner with Riesbeck’s in Elm Grove, which sells $5 pre-bagged groceries to be donated to the food drive. Individuals interested in donating non-perishable good can buy a bag at Riesbeck’s, begin collecting through a school, church or employer or contact Werner at WesBanco by calling 304-234-9221 or emailing werner@wesbanco.com.
