Flower Shop Celebrates 60 Years of Holiday Cheer

From poinsettias to bagels, Susan Freshour, owner of Wilkin Flower Shop in Wellsburg, hurried to prepare holiday deliveries in a whirlwind of tying ribbons, wrapping gift baskets and cutting the evergreen branches of wreaths as the shop buzzed in full swing for the Christmas season.

Freshour said the holidays are the busiest time of year for the traditional flower shop, and she, along with store manager Robin Vargo, are juggling over 30 deliveries a day to local businesses and residents.

“We’ve been working seven days a week with 12-hour days,” Vargo said while passing gift arrangements to a delivery man. “It’s so busy during the holidays.”

“Things have to be ready a day ahead. They can’t be unfinished when the delivery guy comes,” Freshour said. “Business has been really good and Robin keeps me going.”

Wilkin Flower Shop, located in the historic Wellsburg Town Square, has been providing floral arrangements and gifts to the Wellsburg area since 1952, celebrating its 60th anniversary earlier this year, according to Freshour.

The shop is currently filled with Christmas wreaths, garlands of all sizes and colors, and holiday figurines and ornaments find themselves in every corner of the store. A once-abandoned grey cat, Annie, and dog Molly are fixtures of the shop.

In addition to traditional holiday flower arrangements, the shop’s bagel baskets, Freshour said – filled with different types of bagels, cream cheese and jelly – are a unique gift to give this year. Wrapped in bright cellophane and tied with a ribbon, it is the perfect present to fill the tummies of clients, customers and friends alike.

Freshour is the shop’s third owner since its opening 60 years ago. She began working in 1979 until finally buying the shop for herself in 1996.

Since then, she said, computer systems have been updated and a Christmas wing at the side of the shop has opened.

Outside the Christmas season, the shop sells greeting cards, balloons and all-season gifts.
