Clearing Won’t Disrupt Traffic

Traffic will not be interrupted when the first phase of a bridge replacement project along a stretch of Interstate 70 in Belmont County begins Monday, according to Ohio Department of Transportation spokeswoman Becky Giauque.

Crews will begin clearing and grubbing work at the site, where I-70 passes over Ohio 9. The first step of the project is to remove any trees, stumps, roots or any other unwanted material from the project area.

The entire project includes rehabilitating the I-70 bridge over Ohio 9, lengthening the westbound on-ramp from Ohio 9 and replacing the bridge that carries the freeway over the National Road Bikeway and Chambers Run.

When construction work begins, two lanes will be maintained in each direction on I-70, Giauque pointed out, and any lane shifts will occur at night to minimize interruption in traffic. Additionally, pedestrian and bicyclist access to the National Road Bikeway will be maintained with construction of a temporary trail, Giauque noted.

Beaver Excavating Co. of Canton, Ohio, submitted the winning bid of $9.7 million. The completion date for the project is Aug. 31, 2014.
