Health Department Gets Exam Room Funds

WHEELING – The Wheeling-Ohio County Health Department will get to renovate its 53-year-old clinical exam rooms thanks to a $29,000 boost from the Ohio County Commission and $20,000 from the city of Wheeling.

In their fiscal 2014 budgets, the commission and City Council has appropriated the department money for the two exam rooms that are original to the building being built in 1960. Health department Administrator Howard Gamble said he has tried since 2007 to secure other sources of funding for the project with no luck.

”We have not had official estimates done on renovating the rooms. Bids have not been sent out, so our planning for the renovations have been based on our researched costs for equipment and construction. The rooms would function as patient exam and procedure rooms; vaccine and biological storage areas as well as store our clinical supplies,” Gamble said.

He noted the health department continues to see an increased demand for services. Clinics held in the rooms include immunizations for children and adults, flu vaccinations, family planning, breast and cervical cancer screenings, travel vaccinations, HIV/STD clinics, and blood pressure screenings.

”The endeavor would entail the complete remodel of each exam room, new patient exam tables, chairs, physician chairs, exam lighting, current clinic equipment, storage and room lighting. Our goal is to make sure our clinical services at the health department are up to today’s clinical standards and available to the public,” he said, noting work could begin next summer.
