Waller Corp. Low Bidder in Window Restoration Project

WHEELING – While the contract details are still be worked out, it appears Waller Corp. of Washington, Pa., will be restoring the Artisan Center’s windows this summer.

Owned by the Wheeling National Heritage Area Corp., 46 of the downtown center’s wood windows need repaired and reglazed. A recent bid opening revealed Waller was the low bidder at $49,700. Another company, Allegheny Restoration, submitted a bid of $72,541.

Jeremy Morris, WNHAC executive director, said he hopes work will begin in April and be completed June 15.

“The windows are 15-plus years old. They’ve become weathered over time,” he said. “It’s something everyone should do if they have wood windows.”

The windows are not original to the building but were replacements when the structure, located at 1400 Main St., was restored in 1995. The windows that need work are situated on the second and third floors. Work on the first-floor windows occurred last year.

The windows need to be functional, as sometimes they are opened by WNHAC officials and by people attending weddings on the third floor.

For example, during the annual Celtic Celebration the windows are sometimes opened to let out heat created by the high number of attendees.

Money for the project will be taken from the corporation’s general maintenance fund. Morris said final approval of the bid and contract will come from his board of directors.
