Drug Investigation Follows House Fire

No injuries were reported in a Moundsville house fire on Monday evening, but now law enforcement officials are investigating a supply of drugs found in the Seventh Street building.

Moundsville Police Chief Thomas Mitchell said the fire was initially discovered by someone on a walking trail. Emergency personnel responded and the residents of the house were evacuated.

Assistant Fire Chief Ron Walker said the Moundsville Fire Department got the call around 5:40 p.m. and responded, along with Moundsville Volunteer Fire Department.

He said the fire was mostly isolated to the southeast corner of the structure. Walker said the fire was out by about 8:30 p.m., but someone saw another fire near the Ohio River so crews had to turn around and tackle that one.

As far as damages to the house itself, Walker said it is not a total loss.

“It’s reparable,” Walker said Tuesday. “Two rooms sustained pretty extensive damage, but a couple others just had smoke and water. There were no injuries.”

Walker said the cause of the fire is still unknown. An investigation into the matter is ongoing.

Meanwhile, law enforcement officials got a search warrant to take a closer look at some suspicious materials in the house. Police officer Dylan Schrack said the suspicions were confirmed.

“There were some drugs found in the house,” Schrack said Tuesday.

As of Tuesday afternoon, Schrack said the situation is being investigated and no arrests have been made yet.

He said the situation is also being looked into by the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources because there was a child at the house.
