Hearing June 14 in Teen Rape Case
A sexual offender classification hearing has been scheduled for 10:30 a.m. June 14 in Jefferson County Juvenile Court for Trent Mays, 17, of Bloomingdale and Ma’Lik Richmond, 16, of Steubenville, who were found delinquent for raping an intoxicated underage girl in August.
Retired Judge Thomas Lipps in March found Mays and Richmond guilty of the charges.
Mays also was found delinquent on a charge of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material for having a picture of the 16-year-old victim in an outgoing text message on his cell phone.
Lipps sentenced Richmond and Mays to spend at least one year in an Ohio Department of Youth Services facility.
They could remain there until they are 21 years old.
Lipps also ordered Mays to spend at least one year in the youth center for illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material.
Lipps will preside over the June 14 hearing to determine how Mays and Richmond will be classified as sexual offenders.
The Ohio Supreme Court in 2012 ruled the mandatory lifetime reporting requirement for juveniles enacted by state law in 2008 was cruel and unusual punishment.
