Slide Blocks Fish Creek

A landslide along Fish Creek Road blocked traffic Thursday as crews attempted to clear a boulder that had fallen off the hill.

According to Tom Hart, Marshall County Office of Emergency Services director, the slide occurred just before 5 a.m. about three-fourths of a mile east on Fish Creek Road from W.Va. 2. He said the boulder brought trees and mud down with it as it fell, littering the road with debris.

Hart said the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, the Moundsville and Washington Lands volunteer fire departments and the West Virginia Division of Highways all responded. Hart said crews worked throughout the day to clear out the boulder, fallen trees, branches and mud.

“It’s a steep embankment in that area,” Hart said. “They’ve had some landslides in the past at that particular site. With the ground being saturated with the recent rainfall, that might have played some part in it.”

Hart said he was not sure how long the cleanup efforts would take, noting more debris falling from the hillside would prolong the efforts. He suggested motorists use alternate routes, including Sally’s Backbone Ridge Road, Gatts Ridge Road, Games Ridge Road and St. Joseph Road.
