Youth Services System’s annual Celebrate Youth festival at Wheeling Park on Thursday was such a success that golfers found themselves teeing off nearly 100 yards closer to the park’s first green than usual because parking overflowed onto the course.
“Within a couple of hours we had over 2,000 come through. … And we still have several hours to go,” said Jill Eddy, director of community-based services for YSS. “The mission is to make sure that children and families in the valley are aware of all the resources that we have available. We also want to prepare kids for going back to school, so we’re passing out a lot of school supplies and giving them one last day at the end of the summer to have a good time before school starts.”
More than 70 informational booths on health, wellness and education, as well as free food and entertainment, were provided by YSS and its sponsors, according to Eddy.
Information from YSS states the nonprofit, social service agency has served more than 16,000 young people in the last 38 years and is committed to educating, engaging and mentoring youth with a wide variety of services.
