Malicious Wounding Charge in Police Standoff

One man faces a malicious wounding charge after a police standoff ended with an individual being shot in the shoulder Tuesday in Wetzel County.

According to officials with the Northern Regional Jail, Larry Y. Watson, 64, was arrested and charged with felony malicious assault for firing the shot. Meanwhile, Larry Virgil Watson, 41, was charged with misdemeanor assault and battery without a weapon for his involvement in the incident.

Police were called to Earnshaw Road in Wetzel County, not far from Long Drain School, just after 8 p.m. Tuesday for a report of a man in his yard armed with a gun. Once on scene, officials with the Wetzel County Sheriff’s Department and West Virginia State Police Hundred Detachment became involved in a standoff with the individual, who refused to drop the weapon. A portion of W.Va. 7 was closed during the standoff.

One victim was shot in the shoulder before the situation was resolved around 10:45 p.m. An official with the Air Evac Lifeteam confirmed Wednesday that a patient was flown from Long Drain School to Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown late Tuesday.

Officials declined to confirm who had been shot. State Police from the Hundred detachment said the investigation is ongoing, but no further details were released.

An official with the Wetzel County Magistrate Court said Wednesday that no hearings had been set for either Larry Y. Watson or Larry Virgil Watson. They said neither man had been arraigned.
