National Night Out to Offer Free Food Entertainment
WHEELING – Free food, entertainment and the chance to win a prize will once again be featured during this year’s National Night Out set for Tuesday, Aug. 6, at Wheeling Park’s ice skating rink.
The fourth annual event for Ohio County residents is slated from 6-8 p.m., and is meant to bring together the community, law enforcement and other agencies under one roof. Organizer Carol Roset said food offerings will include pizza, hot dogs, chips, pop or water and a popsicle.
Each participant will receive one ticket for a chance to win one prize. Among the prizes to be given away include 20 bicycles, skateboards, gift certificates and a variety of toys.
Organizer Bill O’Leary said the Night Out offers a good time and the opportunity to meet local law officers. He noted members of various neighborhood crime watches also get to mingle.
”National Night Out sends a message to criminals that we are looking out for our neighborhoods,” O’Leary added.
The Wheeling Fire Department’s smoke house, which helps firefighters teach children how to safely exit a home if there is a fire, will be parked outside of the rink.
There also will be 27 tables set up by various organizations and businesses for people to visit. Demonstrations are planned by the Wheeling Police Department’s and Ohio County Sheriff’s Department’s K-9 units.
The K-9 demonstrations show children and adults how the dogs are trained to latch on to a suspect’s arm only and not let go until commanded to by their owner and officer.
