No Interruption For Greyhound Service

Greyhound is pursuing other options to continue bus service in Wheeling after its independent local agent, Mountain Mama’s Kayak and Bike Rental, closes at the beginning of next month, company officials said.

Just where its new base in the Friendly City may be remains up in the air, but a Greyhound spokesperson said the company expects no interruption of service even if the search for a new agent stretches beyond Sept. 1, when Mountain Mama’s owner Roger Malone said he plans to close the business.

“We are committed to continuing service to the community. … If needed, we plan to continue to operate a bust stop from our current location until plans are finalized for our new agency,” Greyhound spokeswoman Jen Biddinger said.

Mountain Mama’s is located at the corner of 14th and Main streets and has served as Greyhound’s independent contractor in Wheeling since its longtime previous agent, which operated out of the Robert C. Byrd Intermodal Transportation Center, retired almost two years ago.

Biddinger said Greyhound is looking at several locations in the city. Riders can purchase tickets by phone, online or at the downtown 7-Eleven, located a block away from Mountain Mama’s at the corner of 14th and Market streets, she noted.

There are no other Greyhound terminals or agents within 50 miles of Wheeling. Cambridge and New Philadelphia, Ohio, and Pittsburgh are the closest, at 51, 57 and 59 miles away, respectively.

Malone confirmed his plans to close the rental business last week.
