Police Probe Kidnap Attempt
The Moundsville Police Department is investigating the attempted abduction of a child from the McNinch Elementary School parking lot Saturday.
Detective William Whitelatch said the incident occurred between 9 and 9:30 p.m. when a child riding his scooter in the McNinch parking lot near his home was approached by the driver of a silver Buick LeSabre, who opened the passenger side door for the child. Whitelatch said the boy turned away and started walking toward his house, but the driver swung the vehicle around and blocked the child’s path. The boy then started yelling “Fire!” and the LeSabre drove off.
According to Whitelatch, the child’s mother witnessed the incident. The driver was described as a Caucasian male in a black, hooded sweat shirt. No injuries resulted.
Police are examining surveillance video from the nearby Loading Zone and Greg’s Market on Fourth Street to see if the cameras captured images of the vehicle driving by or stopping at businesses around the time of the attempted abduction.
“Parents need to be aware of the situation,” Whitelatch said. “We don’t know if it was an isolated incident or if it will continue. If anyone sees anything, call the police department.”
