Saunders: Post-Flood Park Cleanup Coming to an End

Finishing flood cleanup at Valley Fork City Park was the main topic of discussion at the Moundsville Parks and Recreation meeting this week, Mayor Eugene Saunders said.

According to Saunders, the Sam Shaw Walking Trail is now officially reopened to the public with only a little cleanup work remaining. The debris left on the fields from the flood has been collected, though city officials are still determining the best way to eliminate the contaminated debris now sitting in piles in areas of the park. He said the debris should be gone by the end of next week.

“We are making arrangements to get the debris out of there,” Saunders said. “We were going to burn it at the fields, but now we are working to get it hauled out and dispose of it altogether.”

Remaining work includes repairing the damaged fences on the ballfields, a project that Saunders said won’t be covered by insurance. The Parks and Recreation Department is also working to repair the baseball field dugouts.

The board also discussed the arrival of new exercise equipment for the 4-Seasons Pool and Fitness Center, which houses two gyms. According to Saunders, the city has ordered two new treadmills, two stationary bikes, an elliptical bike and other equipment. He said the gyms are set to open in the near future.
