Hensley Arrested in Alleged Stick Beating

On the day he was set to answer charges stemming from an incident in which he allegedly threatened two teens with a knife, Bret Hensley was instead charged with breaking into a man’s home and beating him with a stick.

Hensley, 20, of Wheeling, was arrested in August and charged with two counts misdemeanor brandishing.

Two teens told an Ohio County Sheriff’s Department deputy they were riding bicycles near the Metz Trailer Court on Short Creek Road when Hensley started screaming at them. Hensley then pulled a pocket knife and yelled “I’ll cut you,” at the teens, court documents state.

A pre-trial hearing in that case was scheduled for Friday, but it was continued at the request of Hensley’s attorney, Justin Hershberger, as Hensley was arrested again Friday morning by a Wheeling police officer responding to a fight in Warwood.

According to court filings, the officer witnessed Hensley swing a stick at Robert Cox. After the officer subdued Hensley, Cox said the two were inside Cox’s home before the fight. Hensley became combative and Cox forced him from the residence, filings state.

Hensley, however, kicked in the door of Cox’s home and began striking him with a stick before the fight poured into the street. The officer reportedly saw dry blood on the victim’s mouth and pieces of the door inside the residence.

Senior Status Magistrate Howard Carpenter arraigned Hensley Friday on felony charges of burglary and malicious assault. A preliminary hearing in that case is scheduled for Nov 4.

Hensley remained in the Northern Regional Jail in Moundsville in lieu of $25,000 bond late Friday.
