Board OK’s Bid For New Sidewalk

Ohio County Board of Education members Thursday awarded a bid to construct a sidewalk to the rear of Wheeling Park High School that will lead students directly to breakfast in the food court.

The board convened at Steenrod Elementary School, and awarded the bid to Walters Construction of Wheeling for $42,931.

Also submitting a bid was Kishmo Construction of Apollo, Pa. for $44,363.

The sidewalk will connect the back parking lot with the front entrance, and also provide a way for students to directly enter the food court in the morning for breakfast items, according to Superintendent Dianna Vargo.

School board president James Jorden asked if the work could instead by done by school district workers. Assistant Superintendent Bernie Dolan explained the project was too large.

Walters Construction is budgeting 500 man hours for the work, and a representative of the company present said they will be placing 30-40 yards of concrete.

In other matters, school board members paid bills, and Vargo pointed out some larger charges to board members on the monthly bill.

A total of $66,216 was attributed to child nutrition and food products; $47,165 to AEP for electric service at all of the school district’s buildings; $65,171, for the yearly Wheeling Fire Service Fee for all of the school district’s buildings; $92,675 to the city of Wheeling for prevention resource officers for a half-year; $26,500 to the Ohio County Commission for a prevention resource officer for a half year; and $46,545 to the Ohio County Library for the December tax distribution.

Board of education members also approved the sale of four school buses to Mathies and Son Inc. of Slippery Rock, Pa.

Two 2000 models sold for $5,200 each, while a 1999 and a 2002 bus each sold for $4,300.

Ohio County Schools also sold a 1998 Ford Taurus to Middle Creek Garage for $175 and a 1997 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer to Gerald Hercules for $900.
