Transportation Officials, Football Team Lauded

Quick action by school officials helped a lost young student get back to where he needed to go after he accidentally got off at the wrong bus stop, Ohio County Schools Superintendent Dianna Vargo said Monday.

During the Monday Board of Education meeting at Wheeling Park High School, Vargo thanked Elm Grove Elementary School Principal Richard Dunlevy and Ohio County Schools Transportation Director David Ziegler for helping the Elm Grove student.

“Mr. Dunlevy and Mr. Ziegler immediately helped the child,” she said. “We thank them very much.”

Later during the relatively brief meeting, board members Gary Kestner and Shane Mallett took the time to acknowledge the efforts of the Wheeling Park High School football team.

The Patriots now sport an 11-1 record, having defeated Point Pleasant High School in the West Virginia state playoffs last week.

The team will now face the 12-0 Highlanders of Huntington High School in the state semifinals at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Huntington. The winner of that game will advance to the Super Six Class AAA Championship Game, set for Wheeling Island Stadium on Dec. 7.

“We hope to see them on the Island,” Mallett said of the Patriots.

Officials also announced the following retirements: Mary Grey, as an English teacher at Ritchie Elementary School; Monica Robey, as a special education teacher at Wheeling Middle School; and Rebecca Sinclair, librarian at Wheeling Middle School and Ritchie Elementary School.

The board of education’s next meeting is set for 6 p.m. Dec. 9 at the board office on National Road in Elm Grove.
