Teacher Suspended Following Indictment

The Ohio County Board of Education on Monday suspended Ritchie Elementary School counselor Kristyn Fetcko indefinitely following her indictment earlier in the day for selling oxycodone pills out of her home.

The board convened their regular meeting Monday night at Wheeling Park High School, and members met in executive session for 35 minutes before announcing their decision regarding Fetcko’s employment. Board president James Jorden said Fetcko is suspended without pay indefinitely retroactive to Jan. 22 “pending the criminal charges filed against her.”

In other matters, Ann Gaudino, director of Human Resources for Ohio County Schools, announced changes to the schools district’s calendar made necessary by 12 instructional days missed because of bad weather.

Students now will go to school on instructional support and enhancement, continuing professional development and outside school environment days already built into the schedule. The dates of Feb. 17, April 22 and May 29 are teacher IS days, and students will report to school two hours later on those dates so teachers can take part in faculty senate meetings at the start of the day.

Students will also attend school on March 14, April 14-17, May 23 and May 27-28. The schedule has been adjusted to make up for only 11 of the lost days, and there will be no make up day for the 12th day lost.

“In short, even though our students have missed 12 days, they will have only missed one day of instruction,” Gaudino said. “Hopefully, Mother Nature will cooperate, and we will not have any further cancellations.”

In other reports to the board, Business Manager Steve Bieniek said he, Superintendent Dianna Vargo and Assistant Superintendent Bernie Dolan met with Ohio County Assessor Kathie Hoffman to discuss her idea that the school district reduce its school levy amounts as Ohio County’s property values have increased.

“We will continue to work with Mrs. Hoffman and look at our levy rate to see if it is possible it can be lowered,” Bieniek said.
